DEPENDING ON THE POINT OF VIEW, the baby boomers are the generation that will break the bank or the one that will save it. In Montana, home to the eighth oldest per capita population in the nation, the only things that can be said for sure are that the baby boomers are already making their impact felt — and that businesses are already positioning themselves to serve them.

“Certainly in the past decade, they have been a big part of the Bozeman market, especially in the high end,” Robyn Erlenbush, owner of ERA Landmark, says of the baby boomers, who are classically defi ned as those 76 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964. “If you just look at the sheer numbers, it’s a huge population moving into retirement and wealth.”

According to the Montana State Plan on Aging, the percentage of older people in Montana’s population is growing at a faster rate than that in most other states. Census projections conclude that in 20 years Montana is expected to rank “third in the nation in the percentage of people over the age of 65.” More than one in four Montanans will fi t that demographic.

Norm and Genevieve Dreyer certainly had those numbers in hand when they opened their business, First Choice Home Health, a year ago this month. The company provides both
skilled and unskilled in-home healthcare, offering everything from personal care services to physical therapy in clients’ own homes.
